Zakynthos is a beautiful island rich in wildlife and flora including verdant forests, fruit orchards and olive groves. Mother Nature has blessed the island with wonderful sandy beaches, secluded coves and stunning coastal caves.
As for wildlife the most famous association with the island is the endangered loggerhead turtles known locally as Caretta-Caretta which nest on the islands sandy beaches, along with monk seals and dolphins which can sometimes be spotted out at sea.
Animals on the island are mainly agricultural nature with the most popular to be seen are the goats and chickens.
There is an abundance of beautiful flowers, with pretty colours and wonderful fragrances on Zante. Also the island is rich in other types of flora such as herbs, numerous varieties of trees figs, lemons, oranges, almonds, walnuts, olives, pomegranates and grapes.
Many locals grown their own vegetables organically and the most popular are tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, onions, courgettes, aubergines, beans, peppers, sweet corn, melons and watermelons.
